2021 – The First Annual Oakland Lodge Open House

This past weekend we had our first open house in the new Lodge building. Though attendance from the community was less than we had hoped, we still had several folks stop by to say “Hi” and check out the building. The thing that I am most proud about is the number of Brothers and Sisters from the lodge that either worked, or stopped by to support the event. It was incredible to see so many turn out for the event. We did learn a lot, and hope to make this an annual event with even more local vendors showing up and participating. A huge THANK YOU to everybody for your support and encouragement!!

We also want to thank the local vendors who came out and supported our efforts…

Entertainment was provided by Abracadabra! – who did some absolutely adorable and fascinating balloon twisting.

A huge round of thanks goes to Derek Cheek for all of his hard work in putting this event together. His hard work and commitment is so very much appreciated by the Lodge. But, I was a bit concerned at one point. I really thought the stress of the event was getting to him. Take a look at the photo below and make your own decision about that….

Brother Derek Cheek

Or maybe that was how he was able to see what all of us were doing at the same time. We may never know!!

At the end of our event, we drew the winner of our Ammo Raffle – CONGRATULATIONS goes out to Joe Davenport for winning!!

Anyway – Thanks again to all who participated or stopped by. We really appreciated it and loved talking with everybody. We are already in the planning stages for next year – so hopefully it will be even bigger and better!! Stay tuned for information – hope to see you there!!

Open House!!

Oakland Lodge #140 will be hosting an open house on Saturday, May 29th from 10 an to 4 pm. Local vendors will be set up in the dining hall. Burger or hot dog lunches available for $2.

From noon till 2 there will be a “balloon twister” on site – this is definitely NOT the old fashioned balloon dogs that you used to see – these are BIG pieces of ART!

If you have not had the opportunity to see our new building, or are interested in what the Masonic order is about – we would love to see you there!!

We will also be selling final chances to our ammo raffle – which we will be drawing the winner live at 3pm that day.

Hope to see you there!!

“Virtual” Lodge Get Together…

Brothers – staying connected with each other now is more important than ever. Just because we cannot assemble in our Lodge does not mean that our work need to come to a grinding halt. To this end, we are going to begin hosting bi-weekly “virtual” meetings.

Please know – this is NOT a tyled meeting! This is simply utilizing the current available technology to allow for brothers to “meet” and socialize with each other. At this time we are planning on the second Thursday and the fourth Tuesday of each month for these meetings. The start time will be at 6:30. The next “virtual” meetings will be on April 9th and April 21st.

We did our first of these last week with a small group. The purpose was to hash out some details on some of our committee work – and quite honestly – it was a great success.

To reach as many brothers as possible, the virtual meeting can be accessed through a computer connection (webcam optional – but it may slow your system down), or you can dial directly into the meeting and participate over the phone.

Think of this as the dinner before a stated meeting – but some committee work will get completed – LOL.

Speaking of committees – we realize that everybody has a busy schedule, and oftentimes finding finding time to carve out to attend a meeting is difficult. Hopefully, if we can generate sufficient interest, we can form and administer some of our committees through cyber meetings.

Brother Benjamin Franklin once stated “Out of adversity comes opportunity”. Perhaps this is our opportunity to leverage new technologies to reconnect and expand our good work.

If you are interested in attending one of these meetings, please send an email to oaklandlodge140fam@gmail.com, and I will send you a link and number for the meeting(s)

Oakland #140 Newsletter Returns

Brothers, I am excited to announce that we are bringing back our newsletter. If all goes right, the first edition should be going to press very soon!!! The ultimate goal being a monthly mailing – yes, we are talking about an old fashioned paper newsletter.

In a world ruled by electronics and cyber connections, I am sure many are questioning the logic behind a paper newsletter. The straight forward answer is that there are many of our brothers that either do not have, or choose not to have, access to electronic media. Additionally, we do not have current email addresses for every member of the lodge. (I will take this time to ask you each to PLEASE update your most current contact information with the Grand Lodge of Indiana. This can be done through the portal, or by calling them directly. The Grand Lodge is now the repository for contact information. If you keep your information current there, we should be able to reach out to you.).

Every brother is important to us, and we everybody to what the operations of the Lodge are.

In addition to the mailings, we will also be providing a PDF version on this site for you to review / print.

A big THANK YOU to the committee that took this project on and pushed it through in such a timely manner. A huge shout out to Brother Derek Cheek for all of his hard work in getting this first release of the newsletter together. If you have suggestions for topics or items that you feel noteworthy, please reach out to Brother Derek Cheek at dcheek@opentext.com.

It has been a couple of years since we have had the honor of doing this degree, so there is likely to be a “little rust” that needs to be polished before the big day.

We will be having practices for the degree on Thursday, January 16th and Thursday, January 23 at the lodge building. All officers are asked to make every attempt to be present for the practice sessions.

We look forward to seeing you all for this exciting event!!

We had a wonderful evening and celebration at the annual Feast of Saints John dinner on December 27th. We are greatly appreciative of all the brothers that came to join in the celebration with us. Special thanks to Millersville Lodge #126 and the Brothers there who regularly share this event with us.

Our guest speaker was Brother George Ingles, PM, PGM, PGM Knights Templar. Brother Ingles provided us with an enlightening look into the history of our great fraternity, and highlighted some of the significant moments where the Masons had an impact in the development of our great country.

We are especially indebted to the Ladies of our Eastern Star chapter who went above and beyond in the preparation of an excellent meal! THANK YOU for all that you do to support us – we appreciate it more than words can express.
